www.traveltips.usatoday.com:
Yuri Gagarin had humble origins; he was born to a collective farm carpenter in what was then called Gzhatsk, now Gagarin, Russia. Gagarin studied molding at a trade school and at an industrial college. While a student, he learned to fly and joined the Soviet Air Force, graduating in 1957.
Gagarin lifted off at 9:07 a.m. Moscow time in the Vostok 1 spaceship and orbited the earth at 187 miles, landing at 10:55 a.m. After his flight, the government awarded him the Order of Lenin and made him a Hero of the Soviet Union. They also gave his parents a new house, with a television, and Gagarin received a Volga automobile.
Gagarin died in 1968, at 34, in an airplane crash during a test flight.
Moscow's monument to Yuri Gagarin is a statue located on Leninsky Prospekt, approximately 15 minutes southeast of the Kremlin. Made of titanium, the statue stands approximately 131 feet high and features Gagarin, in a heroic pose that befits a superhero, standing atop a column.
The Soviet Union waited until 1980 to erect a statue to Gagarin, afraid people would start a cult of personality around the famous cosmonaut.
The Soviet government placed the statue at its location because Gagarin passed the square on his way from the airport into Moscow after his flight.

On April 12th, 1961, Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin became the first human to orbit the Earth. Gagarin, who died in a 1968 plane crash, is commemorated by a number of monuments, sculptures, busts and obelisks highlighted by the Monument to Yuri Gagarin located in Yuri Gagarin Square, Moscow.
The 131-ft (40 m) tall titanium monument to Yuri Gagarin was erected in July of 1980, and features an inspirational design created by sculptor Pavel Bondarenko. The monument depicts Gagarin in his space suit, arms partially raised as if he were about to leap into the sky.
